Remove distractions behind the wheel

When Georgia drivers get a text message, they may think it is okay for them to check their cellphone. However, distracted driving can be dangerous, and it is important for people to make sure they eliminate all distractions as they drive.

Distracted driving includes many different behaviors. According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia, drinking a coffee or eating a snack behind the wheel are forms of distracted driving. Putting on lipstick or eyeshadow and brushing hair can also take a driver’s attention off the road. Additionally, cellphones are a main source of distractions. While many people know that texting is a form of distracted driving, they may not realize that making and receiving phone calls behind the wheel is also distracting. Additionally, many people have social media apps and email on their cellphones. People drive distracted when they check these apps and email on the road. While many people may enjoy having company in the car, these passengers can take a driver’s attention off the road. Additionally, navigation systems and maps can also distract a driver, especially if he or she is driving in an unfamiliar area.

Because distracted driving can easily result in a car crash, it is important for people to ensure they are not distracted on the road. The American Automobile Association says that people should usually make sure they are completely dressed before they get in the car. Additionally, it is a good idea for people to put their cellphones away so they do not feel tempted to check these devices. Some people may think they can make phone calls if they use a hands-free feature. However, even these phone calls can take a driver’s attention off the road. Sometimes people may have children in the car with them. It is a good idea to make sure kids are securely buckled in before starting the car so people do not have to reach into the backseat.

Some drivers may want to ask their passengers to help eliminate distractions. Passengers can program navigation devices or read the map so drivers can keep their eyes on the road. Sometimes conversations with passengers may distract a driver. It is important for people to remember that it is acceptable for them to ask a passenger to be quiet so they can focus on the road.
